China Claims 1,000-Year-Old Mummy Stolen

The Cultural Relic Bureau in Fujian province in China has accused an unnamed thief for stealing a thousand-year-old mummy hidden in a Buddha statue in a village in eastern China during 1995. The mummy proved to be a monk, and it became world-known last year when it was first showcased in the Drents Museum in the Netherlands.

The Bureau launched a probe and came across proof that the mummy belonged to an eastern China village which worshipped it as an ancestor. The bureau said it will move to seek repatriation in accordance with the standard procedure.

The mummy, as well as the statue, are currently in possession of a private collector from the Netherlands. The priceless relic was on display at the Hungarian Natural History Museum while it was on a tour through Europe, and it was originally scheduled to be there until May. The museum's website, however, announced that the relic was pulled out of the exhibition due to “request of the loaning partner” - the Drents Museum.

It has been revealed that the private collector bought the statue in 1996 in the Netherlands, but it remains unclear how it entered the Dutch market. According to the Drents Museum, the statue was bought in compliance with all the laws.

The mummy inside the statue was not discovered until the owner brought it in for restoration. When a team of scientists did a CT scan on the mummy, they revealed that its organs were missing.
