New Law In California Makes Vaccinations Compulsory For All Children Regardless Personal Beliefs

Exemptions from vaccinations for children can be obtained only on strict medical grounds, as per the new law enacted in California. The new law brings to an end all exemptions granted on the basis of religious or personal bases. This comes in the wake of parents gaining exemption from vaccination of their wards on personal and religious grounds. This can lead to health hazards, as per state officials. This is why such a tough vaccination law has emerged in the country. Other states like Mississippi and West Virginia already have such laws in place for several years.

California becomes the largest state to accept the requirements in the legal form. This logically means all kids entering kindergarten are to be inoculated against diseases such as measles. Exemption from vaccination can be provided only if a medical doctor approves an exemption on medical grounds. Children with disorders of the immune system or those suffering from certain allergies can be provided exemption if a medical doctor says so.

The new law will not be applicable to admissions to kindergarten who have managed to get a waiver on vaccination because their parents' personal beliefs run counter to the values of vaccination. But they can remain unvaccinated only till the seventh grade. There are about 13,500 such cases in the state. An outbreak of measles in the recent past in Disneyland prompted legislatures to form such a law. The outbreak claimed 130 infections in California, although measles had been officially declared to be completely eliminated from the US in 2000.
