Waiver Of Sanctions Over Iran Translates Into Bonhomie For Iranian Migrants In Kurd

The framework agreement signed between Iran and six world powers on April 2 in Louisanne, Switzerland gave reasons to cheer to many people across the Middle East. Thousands of Iranian nationals settled in Iraqi Kurdistan have also been jubilant about it. This is going to mean a revival of Iran's dilapidated economy, which is to translate as generation of jobs pulling migrants of Kurdish ethnicity them back home. Iranian migrants living in pockets near the Iraqi border are looking forward to the journey back home.

The strain of international economic sanctions since 2007 has propelled many in Iran to seek business and prosperity in Iraqi Kurdistan. The emergence of prosperity in Kurdistan brought out workers from Asian and African countries to Kurdistan too. Many found their way to Kurdistan as cleaners, maids and cafe owners. Those with linguistic affinity with the Kurds has an upper hand here. These were the Iraqi migrants.

But with the improvement in the economy of Iran thanks to the waiver of sanctions, a lot of Irani nationals are looking forward to heading back to their native homes in Iran.

As per an estimate, there are as may as 30,000 Iranian nationals working in Kurdistan, although the exact number is not known. The uncertainty is being attributed to a number of Iranian nationals living in Iraq on an illegal basis.

They do not have valid visas. Many Iranians enter Iraq on the pretext of a 15-day tourist visa. They continue to stay in Iraq even after the 15 day period lapses. The tendency to stay in Iraq even in the absence of a legal visa is attributed to the legal tangles involved in securing a valid visa.
