Wet Wipes Suffocating British Shoreline

The problem of wet wipes being washed ashore along the British coast has literally doubled – as many as 35 non-degradable wet wipes were found on average along each kilometer of shore. That is 50 percent more than in the period between 2013 and 2014. The Marine Conservation Society cleans the beach every year, and they publish a report.

The increase in wet wipe pollution may be due to the fact that it rained a lot during winter between 2013 and 2014. The sewer system was probably choked and a lot of litter ended up in rivers and finally on the beaches. However, this trend, says Charlotte Coombes, a conservation officer, has been repeating for several years now, with every year seeing more and more litter on the British shoreline. She added that people are leaning towards convenience more and more, using non-degradable wet wipes and throwing them in the toilet.

Wet wipes have been known to cause problems in the sewer systems across Britain, but one must not forget their impact on the environment either. Wet wipes are sometimes swallowed by turtles because they mistake them for jellyfish. Wet wipes gets stuck in their stomachs and they eventually die of starvation. The only thing belonging to the toilet is number 1, number 2 and toilet paper. That's all, warn the conservationists.

The problem with wet wipes is that they do not disintegrate once in the sewer, because they contain plastic and thus last for a long time in the sea.
