More American Citizens Being Held in Iran

Earlier this year, issues about American prisoners in Iran came to an end after Washington Post Tehran correspondent Jason Rezaian, former U.S. Marine Amir Hekmati, Christian pastor Saeed Abedini, Nosratollah Khosrawi-Roodsari, and Matthew Trevithick were all released from captivity in the country ruled by theologians.

Unfortunately, Iran has now indicted a number of individuals. NBC News stated the following, “After the issuance of indictments, the cases against (British-Iranian) Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, (American-Iranian) Siamak Namazi, (Canadian-Iranian) Homa Hoodfar and (U.S.-Lebanese) Nizar Zekka ... have been referred to court for processing.”

There has yet to be any details released on the charges that were brought against the four; however this will most spark new conversations between the United States and Iran regarding their judicial practices when it comes to those holding American citizenship. One of the biggest issues revolves around Iran not recognizing dual citizenship.

The country of Iran moves forward in these cases as individuals only have ties to the country, yet speculation leads individuals to believe that Iran may act in this way as a means for power in the international community. It’s very unlikely that the United States government will go against precedent and allow Iran to treat American citizens as they please – same for Canada and the United Kingdom.

It may take several months or years for an arrangement to be reached for these prisoners to return to their native homes as these negotiations are rarely resolved quickly.
